  17. <p>    New York City wine merchant William Sokolin likes to show
  18. off. So last week he brought a bottle of 1787 Chateau Margaux,
  19. which he valued at more than $500,000 and which may have been
  20. owned by Thomas Jefferson, to exhibit at a wine-tasting party
  21. at the posh Four Seasons restaurant. Sokolin did not intend to
  22. hit the bottle -- but he did, against a serving table. Cradling
  23. the bottle tightly against his hip, Sokolin suddenly felt the
  24. liquid asset dribbling down his leg. "When the bottle was
  25. shattered," he explained afterward, "I was shattered."
